Sainte Anne's Church around 1960
Sainte Annes Parish, established in 1799, is the mother parish for all the Catholic Churches in Yarmouth County. As such, this is the most important of all our local Catholic churches. After the return of the Acadians from exile in the 1760s they were without a church. Around 1784 the Acadians built their first chapel at Rocco Point. In 1803, the construction of a new church was commenced on the site occupied by the present Sainte Annes Church. It was finished and dedicated in 1808. This church served the Acadians of the area until March 22, 1900 when it burned to the ground. It was replaced by a larger and more convenient and modern edifice the large arched windows and two towers giving a very imposing and beautiful effect. The master builder of this church was Ambroise Pottier of Belleville, son of Léon Pottier. Photograph taken by an unknown professional photographer sometime around 1960.
